A. O. Scott in the New York Times of October 11, 2002, describes Madonna's "English-language remake of 'Swept Away . . . by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August,' Lina Wertmüller's tart, schematic 1974 comedy about class struggle and sexual combat on a deserted Mediterranean island" as "a soggy and superfluous motion picture that washes ashore nationwide today."
