The Mikado |
In the New York Times of September 17, 2001, Anthony Tommasini wrote of the New York City Opera's Mikado: "It's all very amusing, and the conductor Gerald Steichen keeps the music flowing blithely by. But there is one major problem: the poor English diction of the singers. Everything in Gilbert and Sullivan, including the effect of Sullivan's music, depends on clean enunciation. City Opera rightly forgoes the use of supertitles. But the cast must work much harder to make the words come through." |
