Judith Malafronte in the October 2001 issue of Opera News gave The Voice a very negative review. "[M]ost of this stuff . . . is just embarrassing. Even my pets were staring at me in disbelief." |
I don't consider Russell Watson an opera singer, but I do think that his voice is quite pleasant. He may at times be amusing, but, to me anyhow, not embarrassing. |
This page contains information about Russell Watson, but is not affiliated in any way with the singer. |

"With so much bad musicianship on display, then, why are people buying this CD?," asks Geoff Brown about Encore in The Times of Janaury 29, 2002. "Nothing artsy-fartsy here, the publicity shrieks: here’s an ordinary bloke with spiky hair, to be seen any day in the pubs and football terraces. He’s new, he’s fresh, he can blare out Nessun Dorma; he’s the people’s tenor, at least until the people tire, the grosses fall, and the A and R men manufacture a new one." |
On March 6, 2002, in his final column for the Daily Telegraph, Norman Lebrecht referred to Russell Watson's recordings as "beer-club beltings." |
"His technique is negligible - he sings flat and breathily. Stylistically, he is coarse and flat-footed, without grace or subtlety of interpretation. . . . This is the apotheosis of karaoke, not operatic artistry. Let's get that clear," wrote Rupert Christiansen in a performance review in the Telegraph of April 8, 2002. |
