Franz Schubert's "Symphony No. 4 was completed by April 27, 1816, and probably had its first performance that year in Vienna under Otto Hatwig, with an amateur orchestra that had developed from the Schubert family string quartet.  The subtitle "Tragic" is Schubert's own and was added at a later date.  The first documented public performance was given at Leipzig on November 19, 1849, with August Ferdinand Riccius conducting."--from program notes for the Boston Symphony Orchestra by Marc Mandel.
