The movie was based on a novel by Graham Greene. Although Graham Greene was a very good writer, with an excellent prose style, I found that I just couldn't get through the book. It was just too boring. The characters seemed terribly self-important and unsympathetic to me. It was unclear to me who the different warring factions in Vietnam were. The characters sometimes placed themselves in dangerous situations, but I did not understand why. To the extent that the characters appeared to have motivation, that motivation was unbelievable. |
