I pretty much stopped wearing sweaters about thirty years ago. I have quite a few long-sleeve cotton jerseys, which one might also call long-sleeve t-shirts. They are inexpensive and come in quite a range of colors. One can wear them over a shirt and maybe also under a sport jacket as an extra layer of clothing, but they would not be so possibly oppressively warm as a sweater might be. They can also be thrown in the washer and dryer without any special attention.

This is a good time of year to wear a sweater vest. I’d normally wear one with a long-sleeved shirt with a button-down collar, and if with a jacket and tie, so much the better! The sweater vest with a short-sleeved shirt is usually associated with nerds in comedy sketches.
