What not to wear?

A book, set for release next October, is entitled Preppy: Cultivating Ivy Style, but the cover photo suggests that the book is a guide neither to ivy style nor to preppy style, but rather to a silly club kid sort of look, throwing together miscellaneous retro items so as to be slightly shocking or annoying. The individual items may be preppy, but the overall effect is not preppy. It comes closer to something resembling thrift store chic, so called. But to judge from what I have seen in the blogosphere, there are those who would characterize the look as preppy.

There is discussion of the upcoming book at Ivy Style.

The Fashion File: Advice, Tips and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men, by Janie Bryant

Product Description

From Joanie’s Marilyn Monroe-esque pencil skirts to Betty’s classic Grace Kelly cupcake dresses, the clothes worn by the characters of the phenomenal Mad Men have captivated fans everywhere. Now, women are trading in their khakis for couture and their pumas for pumps. Finally, it’s hip to dress well again. Emmy-Award winning costume designer Janie Bryant offers readers a peek into the dressing room of Mad Men, revealing the design process behind the various characters’ looks and showing every woman how to find her own leading lady style–whether it’s vintage, modern, or bohemian.

Bryant’s book will peek into the dressing room of Mad Men and reveal the design process behind the various characters’ looks. But it will also help women learn how fashion can help convey their personality. She will help them cultivate their style, including all the details that make a big difference.

Bryant offers advice to ensure that a woman’s clothes convey her personality. She covers everything from where to find incredible vintage clothing and accessories to how to pair those authentic pieces with modern shoes and jeans. Readers will learn how to find their perfect bra size, use color to convey a mood, and invest in the ten essentials every woman should own. And just so the ladies don’t leave their men behind, there’s even a section on making them look a little more Don Draper-dashing.

“Of course, the perfectly sculpted silhouettes on Mad Men could not exist without the vital ‘shapewear’, the sculpting, boosting and restraining undergarments of the period,” says an article at telegraph.co.uk.

Another forthcoming book: The Ivy Look

Filed under: Books — Administrator @ 8:24 am

Another forthcoming book will join other new books on the general topic of preppy and Ivy League clothing of past decades, The Ivy Look: Classic American Clothing–An Illustrated Pocket Guide by Graham Marsh and J. P. Gaul. The release date at amazon.co.uk is September 15, 2010, and at amazon.com May 1, 2011. I don’t know there is such a delay in releasing it in the U.S.

Product Description

The Ivy Look is a pictorial celebration of the clothing and accessories that dominated the American male dress code from 1955 to 1965. Democratic, stylish and comfortable, the Ivy look’s impact and influence can be seen to this day in the clothes of designers such as Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani and a host of imitators worldwide. From the button-down hip of Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Miles Davis to the continental Ivy influenced sharp suits of Jean Paul Belmondo and Marcello Mastroianni, from the preppy elegance of the Kennedy brothers to the enduring style of the clothes-obsessed London mods – they all knew the true cool of the Ivy look. The Ivy Look digs deep into the vaults to produce the ultimate guide to the genuine article. New still life shots of original clothing and accessories plus key examples of the cover art of Blue Note, Stax, Motown and Atlantic Records. Contemporary magazine advertisements, French New Wave and key American movie posters and new illustrations will bring the Ivy look into sharp focus.

Product Description

Described by The New York Times as, “a treasure of fashion insiders,” Take Ivy was originally published in Japan in 1965, setting off an explosion of American-influenced “Ivy Style” fashion among students in the trendy Ginza shopping district of Tokyo. The product of four sartorial style enthusiasts, Take Ivy is a collection of candid photographs shot on the campuses of America’s elite, Ivy League universities. The series focuses on men and their clothes, perfectly encapsulating the unique academic fashion of the era. Whether lounging in the quad, studying in the library, riding bikes, in class, or at the boathouse, the subjects of Take Ivy are impeccably and distinctively dressed in the finest American-made garments of the time.

Take Ivy is now considered a definitive document of this particular style, and rare original copies are highly sought after by “trad” devotees worldwide. A small-run reprint came out in Japan in 2006 and sold out almost immediately. Now, for the first time ever, powerHouse is reviving this classic tome with an all-new English translation. Ivy style has never been more popular, in Japan or stateside, proving its timeless and transcendent appeal. Take Ivy has survived the decades and is an essential object for anyone interested in the history or future of fashion.
